Welcome

The Original

The Houston Ginger Man is the oldest of our family of pubs, and has been serving fine beer since 1985. We're located in Rice Village, close to Rice University, the Texas Medical Center, and the West University neighborhood. Need a map?

We hope you enjoy this virtual visit to our pub, but it pales in comparison to actually stopping in for a refreshing pint.

New beer on draught (coming throughout the month)
Dogfish Head Midas Touch Golden Elixir - "This recipe is the actual oldest-known fermented beverage in the world! Our recipe showcases the known ingredients of barley, white Muscat grapes, honey & saffron found in the drinking vessels in King Midas' tomb! Somehwere between a beer, wine and mead, this smooth, dry ale will please with Chardonnay or I.P.A. drinker alike."

Duchesse De Bourgogne - "from Brouwerij Verhaeghe is the traditional Flemish red ale. This refreshing ale is matured in oak casks; smooth with a rich texture and interplay of passion fruit, and chocolate, and a long, dry and acidic finish. After the first and secondary fermentation, the beer goes for maturation into the oak barrels for 18 months. The final product is a blend of younger 8 months old beer with 18 months old beer. The average age of the Duchesse de Bourgogne before being bottled is 12 months."

New beer in a bottle
Piraat - "is a 'living' beer, which means that after the primary fermentation in the keg, the beer also continues to evolve during the secondary fermentation in the bottle or in the keg after packaging. This is a world-class amber colored beer. American beer connoisseurs give it 98 out of 100. No other beer scores better. The flavor is so complex and so rich that every swallow conjures up new associations. Note the spicy light sweetness, which is richly balanced with the robust bitterness of the hops. It is an adventure of a beer, a treat. A strong beer like the Piraat has been brewed for a thousand years to be taken out to sea. The Vikings in particular were well acquainted with this type of potent beer. Piraat has a high nutritional value, keeps well for years and strengthens the body and morale of pirates and other seafarers. It is a healthy energy booster."

Gulden Draak - "is a dark heavy beer with 10.5% alcohol by volume. Gulden Draak is a beer in a class of its own. It is a beer that is so rich, so glowing, so full of its very own characteristic flavor, that it reminds some who try it of chocolate and others of coffee. The English call this type of beer a Barley Wine. Gulden Draak (Golden Dragon) smells of triumph. It is a definite party beer. Gulden Draak is named for the golden statue at the top of the clock tower of Ghent? The statue was originally given to the city of Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey) by the Norse king Sigrid Magnusson in 1111, during one of the first crusades; hence of course the form of a Viking ship that the beast was given. Approximately one hundred years later, Boudewijn IX, Count of Flanders, was the Emperor of Constantinople in one of the following crusades. Because he found the statue so beautiful, he simply took it back to Flanders with him. In 1382, the cities of Bruges and Ghent even did battle for this statue. And who do you think won?"

Samuel Adams Double Bock - "Brewed since the 13th Century, these malty lagers are still some of the biggest and most sophisticated beers around. Bock is the German word for "billy goat" and pictures of goats graze the labels on many bocks and double bocks. We shied away from the goats on our label, but we certainly didn’t shy away from the use of malted barley in this beer. We use an enormous amount of malted barley, half a pound per bottle, to brew this intensely rich lager. Its deep mahogany color and velvet smooth flavor is a testament to the beer’s high quality two-row malted barley. Samuel Adams Double Bock was first brewed 20 years ago as the first of our Samuel Adams seasonal offerings, and it is now one of our most acclaimed beers. Double Bock became one the first big beers to be brewed here in the US, and we are now happy to offer it year round."

Samuel Adams Imperial White - "is a new perspective on the classic witbier style. Witbiers are normally light and refreshing with a fruity finish and we wanted to see how these characteristics would stand up when we amped up the recipe. The result? We were totally blown away by the flavors that were created by this beer. This is not just a more intense version of our spring seasonal Samuel Adams White Ale. Imperial White is a new recipe that stands on it own merits. At 10.3% alcohol by volume, it really is more of a wine substitute than just another refreshing witbier. This is a beer that should be sipped and savored and you’ll be amazed at the flavors you’ll discover as the beer warms and opens up."

Samuel Adams Imperial Stout - "is our take on the traditional Russian Imperial Stouts from the 18th century. English brewers supplied these stouts for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine the Great, who had taken a great liking to the beer. In order for the beer to survive the long trip to St. Petersburg, the flavor and alcohol needed to be amped up to preserve the beer. While this style originated in England, it is a style now known for being uniquely American as craft Brewers have taken this it to whole new level of flavor and complexity. We think we raised the bar again. Samuel Adams Imperial Stout is a massive beer filled with big, dark flavors. It has been a brewery favorite in recent years and we are exited to share this intense brew with you."

Unibroue Chambly Noire - "has an opaque black color with beige-colored foam. Its roasted malt character is complemented by spicy, mildly smoky notes and a suprisingly clean, dry finish."
(Shahm-blee-nwar)
Black ale
6.2% ABV

SKA Modus Hoperandi - "Strong citrus aromas followed by pine rise from the glass. As it moves across your tongue... bitterness... following close behind is a melding of citrus and pine with light caramel sweetness."
http://www.skabrewing.com/main.html

Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Ale - "Dark reddish brown with a nice pink tinted tan head that leaves fine lace on the glass. Smells of tart cherries and citrus with a mild yeasty funkiness. Tastes of tart underripe fruit. Nice sour puckering quality with some sweet maltiness underneath. Well balanced and medium bodied with seltzery carbonation that adds to the drinkability. A nice, approachable example of the style."
